CIRCUS PREMIERE: Jorge Mikell "Rollin'"
/—intro by Bianca Betancourt @bybiancabee
It's practically a rite of passage for any artist—especially music acts—to have at least one body of work that doubles as an ode to their hometown. Chicago musicians are no exception to this rule.
The latest from burgeoning Chicago rapper Jorge Mikell, titled "Rollin'", is a track that sounds like late summer in the Chi; cruising from neighborhood to neighborhood with friends before winter traps us for the season.
Aside from the literal connotations of car cruising, "Rollin'" is a subtle node to a story of black Boy Joy—the fact that no matter the circumstances that outer influences want to plague upon Chicago and it's youth, it's most loyal residents will continue to create and to thrive in the name of their city.
Mikell says it best in the song's last verse, stating "Carefree black boy magic, every hood is a magic show."
